HOT PROSPECTS TO
WATCH!
Winter 2007
ALEX McCAIN
Alex McCain, a senior at Newton High School, has been with our Club
since early summer. Strong, dedicated and a great student of the
science, he was voted our August Boxer Of The Month.
McCain works hard in the Gym for several hours after school 4 days a week.
He follows instructions well and he is his own best critic. Alex is
hard on himself especially when he makes an error during ring skills
training. He strives to perform each drill perfectly and never
runs out of enthusiasm or energy.
After the school bus drops him off at home, Alex changes clothes and
runs 2 miles to the Club ... that's dedication! Alex presently weighs
in at 172 and will hit his 164 goal soon insuring him a great opportunity in
the Middleweight division. Keep your eye on this guy ... he's the real
thing!
JOSH CAMMACK
Josh Cammack joined the Club several months ago primarily to loose
weight, get in better shape and learn advanced boxing techniques to prepare
him for his emerging amateur boxing career. He drives from Sour Lake four
days a week to engage in several hours of strenuous physical challenges
including repetitive drills on the heavy-bag, speed-bag, jump rope, shadow
boxing and many rounds in the ring sparring including one-on-one training
from the ring skills coach.
“It has been a great adventure working with the coaches and other athletes
at the Gym. I’ve lost considerable weight and my strength and endurance is
unbelievable compared to my first month at the Gym,” Cammack stated. “It’s a
great environment to work in. I really enjoy the coaching staff and the
other boxers. Everybody is supportive of each others’ goals and we work
together to help each other meet those goals,” Josh further commented.
SKYLAR CONNER
Skylar, 11, our September Boxer Of The Month, displayed excellent work habits all year but especially during
September as he continues his training for the elite Texas State Silver
Gloves Championship to be held in early December at McKinney, Texas. “We
expect Skylar to participate well in his age and weight class in the Silver
Gloves,” Coach Karpel commented.
“He has nearly 30 bouts to his credit since beginning his amateur career
with our Club in 2005. His hand speed, quick footwork and crisp punching
combinations should make his a serious challenger to advance to the National
Championships later in the Spring,” Coach added.
IAN WOLFF
Ian Wolff, a 3rd grade student at Newton
Elementary and son of Kyle and Dana Eades, is our newest member at the Club.
Ian, 8, is excited everyday when he participates at any work station in the
gym. He gets along well with everybody, especially the older boxers.
They help him with his basics and take time from their personal workout
schedule to assist Ian as he learns the fundamentals. He listens well
and follows instructions.
Ian is proud of himself as he sees more skills evolving daily. "He is
just excited to be in the Club environment and tries hard to prove to the
older boxers that he too can be a champion someday", Coach Karpel commented.
Ian may be ready for the Southeast Texas Golden Gloves Tournament in
February and will be eligible compete in the "All-Comers" division, a
perfect bracket for beginner amateur boxers who have never had a sanctioned
bout before. Stay with it Ian, you've got what it takes!
