HOT PROSPECTS TO WATCH!

WINTER 2008

BRIAN GIPSON

Brian Gipson, 28, has been working out at our Club since spring of 2008.  Initially, Brian was concentrating his efforts on toning up and building endurance with weight-training programs.  For the past several months he has shifted his concentration into learning the sweet science of boxing.

Gipson has superior work habits and strenuous exercise is just fun for him! Graduating Newton High School in 1998, we was an outstanding multi-sport athlete and was respected by his coaches and peers for his dedication to superior work ethics, his outgoing and honest communication skills and the desire to be the best he can be at whatever personal, professional or physical challenges he pursues.

Brian juggles his time efficiently between his job as a certified welding inspector, husband and father of 2 young children, leader in the Masonic Lodge, love of the outdoors and working out at the Gym.  He has been and continues to be a role model for the younger members of the Club and no doubt he will succeed in his amateur boxing career.

SAVANAH TYSON

Savanah Tyson is an 11 year old 6th grade student at Newton Middle School.  She rarely misses a practice and her work ethics are a benchmark for other youth athletes at the Club.

Weighing in at 101 pounds, her hand speed, exceptional practice habits and ability to listen to and apply instruction from her coaches will enable her to rise quickly in the sport.

She prepared with outstanding dedication for the Southeast Texas Golden Gloves Championship Tournament held in Houston a few weeks ago and was awarded the gold medal in her weight and age bracket.

Savanah continues training hard for her next bout scheduled in Crowley Louisiana on March 14th in the Louisiana vs. Texas Championship Series.

ZACHARY "ZACH" BELCHER

Zach, an 8th grade honors student at Newton Middle School, has been with the Club since 2006 and competed in several bouts through the summer of 2007.  Beginning in August of 2007, he concentrated his athletic development by playing football with the highly respected Newton Eagles.  Zack's efforts in football contributed to their team going undefeated and honored as District Champions!

Belcher has returned to the Gym and has brought with him additional agility, strength and self-discipline common to all our amateur boxers who cross-train by participating in Newton Independent School District sports programs.

Weighing in at 136, his physical strength, hand speed and mobility in the ring are key factors in a developing future champion.  Zack is a great role model for the less experienced boxers as his excellent work ethics set the scale high.

Zach was awarded the Silver Medal in the Southeast Texas Golden Gloves Tournament for his outstanding and action packed performance in the championship bout in the 139 pound bracket.

One of the most exciting matches of the tournament, Zach's aggressive and talented pursuit of his opponent earned him respect from rival coaches and other boxers.  He fell just short on points with a split decision from the ringside judges.

The coaching staff at our Club proudly appointed Zach captain of our Junior Olympic boxing team.

ANDRES MIJARES

Andres is 13 years old and is an 8th grade student at Jasper Middle School.  He joined the club in early February.  Weighing in at 107, he is concentrating 100% of his gym time to learning the skills of boxing and completes his workouts with a strenuous weight training program.

With Andres it's all dedication.  Following his 15 mile travel to Newton from Jasper, he immediately zones in on the task at hand ... listen attentively to the coaches, apply his instructions, work hard, challenge himself and stay mentally focused.  His personal work habits are common to all champions in the sport.

His footwork and endurance are evidenced by the 10+ years he has been a standout performer in soccer.  His exceptional skills in soccer earned him a position with the adult male under 30 Division I team!  His self discipline and desire to be the best at his new chosen sport will make him a ranked amateur boxer in the months to come.

GARETT SZEMBORSKI

A 2nd grade student at Newton Elementary, Garett Szemborski may prove to be a "chip off the old block".  His grandfather, Tom Pinner, competed in both amateur and professional boxing for nearly 22 years and narrowly missed being on the 1972 U.S. Olympic Team by narrowly losing in the Olympic Trials Finals to Sugar Ray Seales who won the Olympic Gold Medal that year in the 139 pound class.

He loves coming to the gym after school and never complains about training.  He is intense at every training station, an outstanding trait especially for a youth boxer at his age.

Garett gets along with everyone at the Club including older boxers and his coaches.  He has great communication skills, self discipline, dedication to working hard and desire to make his family proud as he diligently trains for his first bout.
